What’s Your Purpose?
When selecting a name, decide which category your channel will fit into:
Common Name: A name established under your own identity—mostly for social purposes. These types of names might include your initials. Business or Brand: Will you be using this name for business or for establishing a brand? Something like “Viral Vids 2000” might become outdated with a date attached to it. Pick something lasting and timeless. Explanation: A name might be used to describe the purpose of the channel. For example, “Tame This Mane” (for hair). Category: A category-inspired name might be one that describes a hobby or theme. For example, “80s Vintage Cars.”

YouTube names can be up to 20 characters in length and are alphanumeric and case-sensitive.
Tips for Choosing a Good Name
Understand the purpose of the name: Make sure that the name uniquely hints at the purpose of your channel. Is it for your personal use, business, building out a brand, or perhaps for educational purposes? Consider your intent. Create a list of traits: Before you settle on a name, consider making a list of traits that appeal to your channel to help guide your selection. Choose a related topic. Keep it simple, not complex: Consider starting out simple first rather than just jumping to complex topics. Go for easy pronunciation, avoid cliches, and do not use vulgar words. Use your initials: Set common keywords apart by introducing your unique initials. Try a portmanteau or rhyme: A portmanteau is a blend of words (like “smog”—from “fog” and “smoke”). Or try a rhyme, for example, Mellow Yellow. Match across social platforms: Consider using a YouTube channel name that can be adapted across social platforms; stick with your brand. Check the domain availability: If you are building out a business or brand, you’ll want to make sure that the domain name is available for your selected YouTube channel.
